Although some of the pioneering ideas and minds behind the current innovations in AI originated in Europe, our continent needs to strengthen its capacity to develop models that push the frontiers of AI. Beyond the achievements of a handful of organizations, Europe needs a denser ecosystem to build more advanced AI, systems that are more capable and more reliable for our industries, more aligned with our values, more complementary to humans’ skills.
Europe already trains amazing talent, is building computing capacity, boasts great companies to partner with and could structure unique data assets to advance AI. What is lacking is the ability to weave those assets together to support the best teams making strategic bets at scale.
Advancing AI requires world-class talent, able to work on new methods and push the boundaries of existing ones. World-class talent requires a world-class environment, which includes competitive salaries, scientific freedom, access to efficient computing and technology stack, and unique data sources. This would catalyse the birth of new champions in AI, scaling breakthroughs and leveraging deep data assets until private capital can take over.
To this end France and Germany with the support of the European Commission are delighted to announce that bringing together public and private partners for a European Frontier AI Initiative. A founding task force will work towards :
- establishing in Q1 2026 a unique non-profit public-private initiative focusing on the best teams to offer them a world-class environment dedicated to frontier AI development;
- including other Member States, European and international partners and investors and philanthropies in the initiative;
- setting up a high-level group of advisors to the initiative ; ensuring that the initiative attracts and recruits talent at the highest level;
- making this the best funded non-profit Frontier AI initiative in the world, including by giving it access to Europe’s upcoming giga-compute capacity over the lifetime of the initiative.
