The President of the Republic spoke by telephone with Mahmoud ABBAS, President of the Palestinian Authority, on Saturday, 4 June 2022. 

President ABBAS congratulated President MACRON on his re-election. 

President MACRON expressed his concern in the face of the growing tensions and worsening situation in the Palestinian Territories. He condemned the continued settlement-building policy and reiterated France’s unwavering commitment to respect for the legitimate rights of the Palestinians. 

President MACRON stated his readiness to help contain any escalation and foster resumed negotiations aimed at achieving fair and lasting peace in the region. He underlined his particular attention for the Holy Sites in Jerusalem, which he visited in January 2020, and the stability and security of all stakeholders in the region. 

President MACRON also presented his condolences to President ABBAS and the Palestinian people for the death of journalist Shireen ABU AQLEH and restated the importance France attaches to full light being shed on the circumstances of her death.
