President Nicolas Sarkozy had a long telephone conversation on Tuesday with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his designated successor, Gordon Brown, to prepare Thursday and Friday's European Council on the institutional issue.
Elysée Spokesman David Martinon said that Messrs Blair and Brown were in the same office and that the conference call was "positive and useful".
According to him, the three men "reviewed at length the British and French red lines" in the negotiations on the European "simplifed treaty" to try and "find points of convergence and ways out".
