President Emmanuel Macron spoke by phone with U.S. President Donald Trump on March 27.

They discussed several international issues.

The French and American Presidents hailed the strong international response to the Salisbury attack. The measures adopted by the United States, the European Union, NATO, and several member states of these two organizations underscore the sense of solidarity toward the United Kingdom and the unequivocal condemnation of the use of chemical weapons. Such a threat to collective security and international law could not go unanswered.

On Syria, the French and American presidents agreed that the fight against Daesh remained their absolute priority. Nothing should distract from the efforts made by the international coalition and its allies. France and the United States share the same concern over the serious deterioration of the situation and the need to focus all our forces on the fight against Islamist terrorists.

With respect to international trade, President Macron stressed that the EU’s steel and aluminum exports do not constitute a threat to U.S. national security, and therefore additional tariffs should not be imposed on it. He also emphasized the need to strengthen the rules of international trade in order to guarantee fair competition in global trade.
