PRESIDENT ABBAS/PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES/SHALIT
President Sarkozy yesterday telephoned Mr Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority. President Sarkozy signalled his support for President Abbas in the face of the gravity of the present situation in the Palestinian Territories. In particular, the Head of State said he would ask, at the forthcoming European Union Council of Ministers, on 18 June, for emergency financial support through the PLO account for the Palestinian Territories.
President Sarkozy also expressed his solidarity and determination to help the Palestinian Authority, liaising with France's European, American and Israeli partners.
The Head of State reiterated the major importance in his eyes of the release of Corporal Shalit. He reiterated his firm belief that the only lasting solution was the establishment of two viable, democratic States, living side by side in security and within safe and recognized borders. France with her partners, particularly within the Quartet, must do her utmost to achieve a negotiated solution. President Sarkozy expressed his support for a resumption of the negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
PRESIDENT MUBARAK/DARFUR/GAZA/LEBANON
President Sarkozy then called President Hosni Mubarak. They discussed the situation in Darfur, for which President Sarkozy wishes to mobilize the most important actors in order to relaunch the negotiation, achieve a peace agreement and speed up deployment of the hybrid force.
They also talked about the situation in Gaza which President Sarkozy described as extremely worrying. Finally, they talked about the recent developments in Lebanon.
PRIME MINISTER SINIORA/LEBANON
The Head of State also had a telephone conversation with Mr Fouad Siniora, Prime Minister of Lebanon, to express to him his support for his efforts to restore the Lebanese State's authority throughout its territory. As a sign of his support, he invited Mr Siniora to Paris on 26 June.
President Sarkozy has utterly condemned the bombing which cost the life of the Lebanese Member of Parliament Walid Eido. France, with the international community, is at Lebanon's side in the face of this fresh attempt at destabilization. The perpetrators of these attacks must know that they will not achieve their goals. "You symbolize, and with what courage, the authority of the Lebanese State", President Sarkozy told Prime Minister Siniora.
